Race Report - Round 2

LUIS AT THE DOUBLE WHILST SHAH WINS BATTLE ROYALE

RD2 Cadet Category

The cadet section was all about the masterful qualifying pace of Asha Brooks, who was to cruise to victory five times and secure maximum points ahead of the Grand Final., with series leader Luis Ikonen alongside on the front row and Rasaan Malcolm-Moore leading off grid 2 with a delighted Tyler Dougan on grid 4 and

Solid performances from Krishaan Sivagnanam and Finbar Skitini both were showing their potential on the international circuit.

We saw two new drivers to the series join in at round 2, with Rian Phillips in particular putting in a feisty performance, showing lots of potential once he smoothes his style down a bit.

The heats opened with Brooks producing the first of his five wins and Ikonen taking a penalty for a tangle with Tyler Dougan, and heats 6 and 7 saw some good racing as the favorites went head to head in some heavyweight clashes.

Joel Golding and Rian Phillips fell foul of the black flag, not understanding the penalty board rule, all part of the learning curve, and Brooks completed his perfect score in Heat 20 looking untouchable. There was also the heartening sight of Jacob Lefevre winning a heat, rebuilding his confidence after a traumatic midweek smash in training.

The Grand Final was the customary dash to the first turn, with everyone glued to the Brooks/Ikonen battle that saw their karts lock together on the run in... It was clear that however came out of that tussle on top stood a decent chance of victory, and from the moment that Luis Ikonen released his kart to snaffle the lead, he looked assured.

Asha Brooks disappeared into the chasing pack, as Rasaan Malcolm-Moore took up 2nd place, vainly chasing the now in his stride Ikonen, and so it stayed with Luis, Rasaan and Asha maintaining a healthy distance between each other as they ticked the 10 laps off.

Driver of the day was awarded to Jacob Lefevre for making it to the Grand Final by way of qualifying from the C and B finals!

RD2 Junior Category

The Junior section began in a quiet atmosphere, with Daniel Wright and Jonas Moore quickly stamping their authority on proceedings with some enormous wins in the early heats. The pick of the early race action was Andy Rrapo’s masterly move in Heat 8 to take 2nd place and Wright’s dash to victory in Heat 3.

Other than that, we had to wait until the latter races for anything of note as most races were won from pole position, showing the closeness of the field with most drivers capable of winning a race. Worthy of mention was Wole Bello’s win under great pressure in Heat 27.

Daniel Wright jetted away from the start to take command early on, but Prajesh Shah found something special for this final. The gentleman suddenly became Tough of the Track as he came from grid 6 to take up the challenge, and with 3 laps to go, Wright was casting nervous glances over his shoulder at the rapidly advancing Shah.
Corner after corner, lap by lap, the lead changed hands with Wright and Shah fighting tooth and nail, but without ever making significant contact, a masterclass on how to race properly.

Eventually Shah found the guile and pace to hold off his ever pressing nemesis to take a popular and emotional victory, and the lap of honour given to both drivers was much deserved, for truly both drivers could have won.

3rd place equally hotly contested, with never much between Sipho Manzi and Jonas Moore, before Manzi got the drop on the last corner.

Alex Douglas was awarded driver of the day, once again coming through the repocharge all the way from the D final to contest the Grand Final.
